Paneum is a bread museum at the Backaldrin company site in Asten, Upper Austria. Architect Wolf D. Prix of Coop Himmelb(l)au designed the building: a concrete storey topped by a vaulted timber structure clad in NiRo sheet, shaped like a loaf or a lump of dough, with an outdoor staircase. Inside, 1,200 exhibits fill almost 1,000 square metres.
The Paneum was built at the headquarters of the food company Backaldrin in Asten, Upper Austria, and its architecture by Wolf D. Prix of Coop Himmelb(l)au received the Austrian Bauherrenpreis in 2018. The exhibition was designed by the Bolzano studio Gruppe Gut and draws on 30 years of collecting.
The exhibitions show how bread is made and eaten differently across cultures and what role it plays in everyday life. Visitors see traditional methods displayed alongside modern practices.
