Schloss Tillysburg, Medieval castle in Sankt Florian, Austria
Schloss Tillysburg is a castle in Sankt Florian, Upper Austria, built around a rectangular inner courtyard with four wings and square corner towers. The east wing stands out for its baroque staircase, which is the most notable interior feature of the building.
The castle was built between 1633 and 1645 using stone from the older Volkenstorf fortress, which Count Werner t'Serglaes von Tilly had taken over in 1629. The new structure replaced what had been a defensive fortification on the same site.
Anton Bruckner spent time here as a music teacher for the children of Count O'Hegerty during his years as a schoolteacher in the area. Today the grounds are used as a golf club, giving the place a very different daily life from its aristocratic past.
The exterior of the castle can be seen from the grounds, which are now home to the Linz Sankt Florian Golf Club. Visitors who want to get a closer look should be aware that the golf course is in active use and act accordingly.
The baroque staircase in the east wing was modeled on the one at Sankt Florian Abbey, just a short distance away. This deliberate borrowing links the castle architecturally to one of the most important religious buildings in Upper Austria.
