Soldatenau

Soldatenau extends for 1.2 kilometers along the Danube River, covering 31 hectares of land with natural riverbanks and low-nutrient meadows.

In 1610, the island received its name when military forces established a station there, and for the past century the city of Passau maintains ownership.

The preservation of Soldatenau represents the last remaining fragment of the original Danube river landscape that existed before industrialization and river regulation.

The island functions as the primary water source for Passau, leading to restricted access measures that protect the natural water supply system.

This protected environment harbors plant species such as Kleine Mädesüß and Brand-Knabenkraut, which cannot be found elsewhere in the Innviertel region.
