Üble Schlucht, Protected canyon in Laterns, Austria
Üble Schlucht is a canyon carved through limestone with steep rock walls and fast-moving water sections. The river creates calm pools in places where the current slows down.
The gorge served as a vital transport route for log floating between Laternsertal and the Rhine Valley. This dangerous passage allowed timber workers to move resources across the region over centuries.
The name translates to Bad Gorge, referring to the hazardous conditions timber raftsmen faced while navigating this narrow river passage. Visitors walking through today can still sense the dangerous character of this waterway.
Wear sturdy hiking boots, as the ground is slippery and uneven throughout the walk. Winter closures apply to certain sections due to rockfall risk.
The area is part of Europe's protected nature reserves and preserves one of the few natural landscapes in Vorarlberg that remains untouched by human development. This preservation makes it a rare example of how the region's nature looked before modern change.
