Frastanzer Ried

Frastanzer Ried is a wetland reserve spanning about 39 hectares in the Walgau region, shaped by natural spring sources and featuring alternating meadow and water zones. The gently rolling landscape contains areas of varying moisture levels that support diverse life forms.

The area was organized in 1915 as a cooperative by local landowners to manage and protect the land through agricultural use. This management structure has continued through the decades and shapes how the place functions today.

The reserve serves as a research site where scientists document 374 plant species, 504 butterfly species, and 110 different wild bee varieties.

Visitors can explore the grounds on foot using clearly marked paths that lead through the different zones. Information materials are available at the local municipality office, which also provides guidance on protection rules and how to visit respectfully.

The site hosts six of the ten native amphibian species found in the region plus four of the six reptile species in Vorarlberg. This high concentration makes it a particularly valuable habitat for these animals.
