Hotel National, Protected historical building in Leopoldstadt, Vienna, Austria
The Hotel National occupies a corner building at Taborstrasse 18 and Schmelzgasse 2, featuring decorative parapets and caryatids along its central axis point.
Built in 1848 by architects Ludwig Förster and Theophil Hansen, this structure replaced the Golden Ox Inn, which had stood at this location since 1678.
During its prime, the building contained luxury accommodations with central heating and a semicircular inner courtyard, reflecting the architectural standards of 19th-century Vienna.
The structure stands near the Hospital of the Brothers of Mercy, which acquired the property in 2009, maintaining its protected status under heritage conservation laws.
The rooftop garden with observation terrace served as one of the main attractions, providing guests with expansive views across the Leopoldstadt district.
