Vega-Sternwarte Salzburg, Astronomical observatory in Nußdorf am Haunsberg, Austria
Vega-Sternwarte Salzburg sits on a hilltop at 800 meters elevation and houses two domes containing modern telescopes for astronomical observation. The facility serves both scientific research and public education in astronomy.
The observatory opened in August 2018 as part of Haus der Natur Salzburg, replacing a smaller facility that operated previously in Voggenberg. This establishment created a modern research center with significantly expanded capabilities.
The astronomy working group of Haus der Natur operates the observatory, conducting scientific research and organizing educational programs for the public.
Visitors can join guided tours offered regularly, and the site provides good conditions for extended nighttime observation. The location at higher elevation means dressing for changing weather and wearing sturdy footwear is recommended.
The facility houses Austria's third largest telescope, a Ritchey-Chrétien-Cassegrain instrument with a one-meter mirror. This equipment enables observations far beyond what the naked eye can detect and reveals deep-sky objects with remarkable detail.
