Mohr-Gruber-Denkmal

The Mohr-Gruber memorial is a bronze sculpture in Oberndorf near Salzburg that depicts two important local artists. The composition shows Joseph Mohr gazing through a celestial window while Franz Gruber holds a guitar behind him, with their figures arranged to reflect the artistic partnership they shared.

The memorial was unveiled in 1928 and commemorates the creators of a Christmas carol first performed in 1818 at Saint Nicholas Church. Sculptor Josef Mühlbacher modified his initial design in 1926 to honor both artists equally, as his original work had featured only one of them.

The memorial honors Joseph Mohr, a priest who wrote the lyrics, and Franz Gruber, a teacher who composed the music for a famous Christmas carol. Standing here, visitors sense the bond between these two local figures who created something that touched people worldwide.
