Torfau

Torfau is a nature reserve in Ulrichsberg featuring wetlands, meadows, and waterways that together form a diverse ecosystem. The landscape with its different moist habitats provides living space for rare bird, insect, and plant species.

The area was officially protected in 2006 to preserve the region's rare bog and moist habitats. This designation was part of a conservation program aimed at maintaining these valuable ecosystems in Upper Austria.

Local communities participate in educational programs focused on biodiversity preservation and environmental protection within the Torfau reserve.

Visitors can hike on marked trails throughout the reserve and should follow signs to respect protection rules. It is best to wear sturdy shoes and waterproof clothing since the moist ground, especially in bog areas, can be slippery.

The boggy landscape here is home to rare sphagnum mosses and specialized plants that thrive only on very wet and acidic soils. Those who look closely will also spot dragonflies and water spiders found almost nowhere else in the region.
