Shahbuz State Reserve

Shahbuz State Reserve is a protected mountain area in Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic situated at elevations around 2300 meters. The terrain features mountain pastures, a lake, and thick forest and shrub growth on steep slopes.

Azerbaijan's government established the reserve in 2003 to protect the region's plants and animals. This founding was part of broader efforts to preserve mountain habitats in the southern Caucasus region.

The area near the reserve is shaped by shepherds who traditionally graze their herds on the mountain pastures as part of daily life. This everyday use of the landscape shows how people and nature are closely woven together here.

A visit requires a permit obtained before arrival since the area is strictly protected. Prepare for uneven mountain terrain and bring waterproof clothing, as conditions vary greatly by season.

The area contains mineral-rich springs that bubble from the ground and give the landscape special properties. These natural springs attract rare wildlife species that are hard to find elsewhere in the region.
