Central Aran Economic Region, Economic region in Central Azerbaijan.
The Central Aran Economic Region is an administrative zone in central Azerbaijan covering several districts along the Kura River lowlands. It combines flat agricultural land with the industrial city of Mingachevir, which sits on the Mingachevir Reservoir.
This zone was created in 2021 as part of a national reform that replaced Azerbaijan's older regional divisions with new economic regions. The territories it now covers had long been shaped by Soviet-era administrative boundaries that remained in place after independence.
In Mingachevir, the largest city in the area, daily life mixes industrial work with a strong river culture tied to the Kura River. Local markets in the smaller towns still carry handmade goods and seasonal produce from nearby villages.
Mingachevir is the main hub and the easiest entry point for the area, reachable by road and rail from Baku. Traveling between smaller districts is simpler with a private vehicle, as connections to rural areas can be limited.
The Mingachevir Reservoir, created when a dam was built in the 1950s, submerged ancient settlements that had existed along the Kura for centuries. Some archaeological finds from those sites were recovered before the flooding and are now kept in local collections.
