Yukhari Mahalla Synagogue, 19th century synagogue in Oghuz, Azerbaijan

Yukhari Mahalla Synagogue is a religious building from the 19th century in Oghuz, constructed with traditional brick and featuring typical elements of Jewish religious architecture. The structure sits on Gudrat Aghakishiyev Street and displays the construction methods that were used during its creation.

Rabbi Barukh oversaw construction of this building in 1897, and it later served as a storage facility during the Soviet period. After Azerbaijan gained independence, extensive renovations between 2004 and 2006 restored the structure to its original purpose.

This place served as a spiritual center for the local Jewish community and reflects the traditions that shaped daily life in the city for generations. The structure itself stands as evidence of a community that maintained its practices and identity over time.

The building is accessible to visitors, especially during services held traditionally on Friday and Saturday. It helps to learn about local worship practices and be respectful when present during religious ceremonies.

Only ten Jewish temples exist across all of Azerbaijan, making this building one of a rare group of religious monuments. The concentration of these places in just two cities shows how important these locations are for maintaining Jewish traditions.
