Shaki Fortress

Shaki Fortress is a medieval stronghold in Shaki featuring thick stone walls that protected multiple structures, including a winter palace built in the 18th century. The compound holds residential, administrative, and storage areas arranged around a central space.

The fortress was built in the mid-18th century under a local Khan as both a military base and administrative headquarters. It served as a key control point for the region and its resources during that era.

The fortress shows how people from the Shaki region built their defensive structures using red brick and local design methods. Walking through the buildings inside reveals how rulers and families lived together within protective walls.

You can walk freely through the ruins and explore the different buildings, though some areas have uneven or slippery surfaces. Wear comfortable shoes and watch your step, especially during or after rain when the old stones become slippery.

The winter residence inside the fortress was architecturally advanced and combined living and government functions under one roof. This dual purpose was unusual and shows how closely power and family life were intertwined during that period.
