Jinli Qala, fortress near Ilisu, Gakh region of Azerbaijan
Jinli Qala is a fortress near the village of Ilisu in the Gakh region of Azerbaijan, built on a high hill with thick stone walls in the Arran architectural style. The structure features thirteen towers spaced along its perimeter, with a main tower approximately 10 meters tall at the highest point, alongside remnants of rooms, storage areas carved into the ground, and internal structures showing how defenders once occupied the space.
Jinli Qala was built between 700 and 900 years ago, possibly in the 1700s, and served as a key defensive point in a region marked by frequent conflicts and changing rulers. The fortress was repaired and rebuilt several times across the centuries as it remained important for military purposes and as a residence for local leaders and warriors.
The name Jinli Qala means 'Jinli Castle' in Azerbaijani and reflects local stories passed down through generations. The fortress demonstrates how communities in this region have protected their land and homes across many centuries.
The best time to visit is during cooler months when the weather is milder, and wear comfortable shoes as the ground is uneven and sometimes fragile with age. The fortress is accessible by road from nearby villages, standing about 5 kilometers from Ilisu village on a clifftop above the Kurmukhchay gorge with steep slopes on all sides.
The fortress features a secret escape door beneath the northern wall that allowed defenders to flee quickly during siege situations. This hidden passage was normally kept sealed and reveals the thoughtful defensive design that ancient builders incorporated into every corner of the structure.
