Seven Church monastery complex

The Seven Church monastery is an early Christian religious site in Qakh District consisting of several separate stone buildings scattered across a hillside. The structures display traditional features of early Christian architecture with rough stone walls and simple, functional designs.

The site was founded in the early 5th century and ranks among the oldest Christian structures in the Caucasus region. Its construction marks an important moment when Christianity took root in this area and permanent religious buildings emerged.

The monastery reflects building traditions of the Caucasian Albanian Church, visible in how the seven structures are arranged across the hillside. This layout shows how the religious community organized its spaces for worship and daily life.

You reach the monastery from the nearby village of Ləkit Kötüklü via walking paths that connect the buildings on the hillside. The terrain is hilly and should be explored at a leisurely pace with comfortable footwear to view all seven structures properly.

One of the churches is dedicated to Saint Thaddeus and dates to the 5th century, making it among the oldest structures at the site. Its age highlights how this place mattered in the earliest spread of Christianity in the region.
