Patenga, Beach in Chattogram, Bangladesh
Patenga is a beach along the Bay of Bengal shoreline with white sand extending for roughly 4 kilometers. A concrete wall and large stone blocks form a protective barrier running the length of the coast.
A severe cyclone in 1991 caused extensive damage to the coastline, prompting the construction of protective measures. The concrete wall and stone barriers were built to prevent future erosion and storm damage.
Food vendors line the shore selling traditional Bengali seaside snacks like piyaju and fried crab, while families gather beneath casuarina trees to eat together. The beach serves as a social gathering place where locals spend their leisure time by the water.
The beach is located roughly 14 kilometers south of Chattogram city center and is accessible by local buses, taxis, and rickshaws. Visitors should swim in shallow waters near the shore and be aware of changing water depths as you move further out.
The beach sits where the Karnaphuli River meets the Bay of Bengal, creating a distinctive intersection of river and sea. Cargo vessels anchored offshore nearby reveal the port's commercial activity just beyond the shoreline.
