Mariënlof Abbey, Cistercian nunnery in Kerniel, Belgium

The abbey features a traditional Cistercian architectural design with stone walls, large windows, and a central courtyard surrounded by monastic buildings.

Founded in 1438 by Maria van Colen as a cloister for the Order of the Holy Cross, the monastery transformed into a Cistercian nunnery in 1822.

The shrine of Saint Odilia from 1292 and the Chair of Saint Lutgard from 1190 represent significant religious artifacts preserved within the abbey.

Visitors can explore the abbey from April through October, with guided tours by resident sisters available Monday to Saturday 14:15-17:00 and Sunday 15:00-17:00.

An art installation called Untitled #158 by Aeneas Wilder surrounds the abbey with vertical wooden slats, creating a 360-degree viewpoint of the grounds.
