Averbode Abbey, Norbertine monastery in Scherpenheuvel-Zichem, Belgium.
The Averbode Abbey complex contains a 14th-century gatehouse with a food distribution hole and a central courtyard featuring a reflecting pool.
Founded in 1134 by Count Arnold II of Loon, the abbey started as a dual community where both men and women lived together in religious practice.
The abbey church, designed by Jan van den Eynde during the 17th and 18th centuries, exhibits detailed wooden choir stalls accessible through guided tours.
The monastery offers guided afternoon visits lasting two hours, with an entrance fee of 4 euros per person and additional guide costs for groups.
After 150 years at the MAS museum, the original abbey altarpiece returned to its intended location through the Flemish Masters project in 2023.
