Lake Bütgenbach, lake in Bütgenbach, German-speaking Community of Belgium, Belgium
Lake Bütgenbach is a large reservoir in Belgium created by damming the Warche River, featuring an oval shape surrounded by forests and rolling hills. The lake has sandy beach areas, a children's paddling pool, anchored water play structures, and boat rental services for kayaks and pedal boats.
The dam was built starting in 1929 and completed by 1932, with the old road from Bütgenbach to Berg rerouted over the new dam structure. A power station began generating electricity, and from the 1960s onward the area became a recreation destination that led to the development of the Worriken sports center in 1968.
The lake serves as a gathering place where local families and visitors enjoy outdoor time together throughout the year. The sandy beach areas and waterside paths have become central to how people spend leisure days in the region.
The lake is easily reached by car with parking on both sides of the water and a bus stop nearby for alternative access. The paths around the water are well-maintained and suitable for families, with the 10.5 kilometer loop trail being especially popular for walking and biking through forests and along the shoreline.
The reservoir was constructed in less than four years and replaced an existing road connection with the dam structure itself, an early 20th-century engineering feat. This development not only provided water management and electricity but also inadvertently created one of the region's most popular leisure destinations.
