Puyenbroeck, Province domain and artificial pond in Wachtebeke and Lochristi, Belgium.
Puyenbroeck is a provincial domain in East Flanders, Belgium, covering parts of Wachtebeke, Lochristi, and Lokeren. It combines artificial ponds with wooded areas, all connected by a network of walking and cycling paths.
The area was originally a marshy, low-lying zone at the edge of several Flemish municipalities with little agricultural use. During the 20th century, the Province of East Flanders developed it into a public recreational domain by digging ponds and managing the woodland.
The name Puyenbroeck comes from Flemish and refers to a marshy area, which still matches the landscape today. Around the ponds, you can see families picnicking and cycling, and the area is used as a shared outdoor space by people from the surrounding towns.
The domain can be entered from several points across its three municipalities, each with parking nearby. The ground can get muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea, especially on forest paths.
The ponds at Puyenbroeck were shaped with shallow, irregular banks to give wading birds and ducks better living conditions than a standard lake would. This makes the area one of the most bird-rich provincial domains in East Flanders.
