Steenbakkerij Frateur

Steenbakkerij Frateur is a former brick factory in Boom with industrial buildings spanning different periods. The complex displays all stages of brick production, from drying sheds and firing ovens to workshops and storage areas.

The site begins in medieval times but transforms in the twentieth century when the Frateur family consolidates multiple brick works into one operation. Production ceased in 1981 as industrial brick making declined in the region.

The factory name reflects the Frateur family who shaped the works for decades. Walking through, you notice how the buildings and workshops still bear traces of the people who worked here.

The site now operates as a museum offering guided tours through the preserved production areas. Visitors should allow extra time to explore since the buildings are spread across the grounds.

The ring oven was built with an unusual elliptical shape beneath a tiled roof and still functions with its original parts. This early twentieth century construction is rarely preserved and demonstrates older firing methods.
