Sluizencomplex van Evergem

The Evergem lock complex consists of two separate locks that regulate water levels for vessels traveling between Ghent's port and surrounding waterways. The older lock dates from the 1960s, while the newer facility completed in 2009 accommodates larger inland vessels up to 4,400 tons.

The first lock was built starting in 1948 as part of developing the Ghent Ring Canal, which began operation in 1969. The second lock was constructed later to meet growing demands from modern inland shipping traffic.

The lock system is part of daily operations for vessels moving between Ghent and surrounding waterways. Visitors can watch the locks function and understand how inland ships navigate the region.

The best way to see the locks in action is to visit from nearby observation platforms, especially when larger inland vessels are passing through. It is free to access and easy to reach on foot to watch the operation.

The newer lock stretches 293 meters and is Belgium's largest inland navigation structure with three pairs of gates and partial chamber functionality. This design allows larger vessels to move efficiently while saving energy.
