Sluizencomplex van Evergem

The Evergem lock complex contains two separate locks that manage water levels for vessels traveling between Ghent's port and surrounding waterways.

Construction of the first lock began in 1948 during the development of the Ghent Ring Canal, which became operational in 1969.

The lock system represents Belgian engineering excellence and serves as an educational site where visitors learn about maritime transportation infrastructure.

The newer lock, completed in 2009, accommodates inland vessels up to 4,400 tons and operates using advanced camera systems and radar technology.

At 293 meters in length, the second lock stands as Belgium's largest inland navigation structure with three pairs of gates and partial chamber functionality.
