Kruikenburg Castle, Medieval castle in Ternat, Belgium
Kruikenburg is a stone castle in Ternat featuring multiple towers with architectural elements from both medieval fortifications and eighteenth-century residential modifications. The building stands within park grounds and part of it now houses De Brug primary school, run by the Christian Brothers.
In the twelfth century, the Lords of Wezemael built a watchtower at this strategic location near the County of Flanders border. The structure was later transformed and expanded into a residential castle.
The name Kruikenburg comes from stone carvings of jugs on the castle towers, and a new jug is regularly placed above the entrance to keep this tradition alive. This detail remains visible today and connects visitors directly to the place's past.
The castle grounds and surrounding park are open to visitors for exploration. It is helpful to know that school activities may affect access to certain parts of the building during school hours.
A former underground passage that once connected the castle to Saint Gertrude's Church now functions as a wine cellar beneath the property. This hidden space reveals how the two buildings were once linked together.
