Fort de Chaudfontaine, Military fort in Chaudfontaine, Belgium.
Fort de Chaudfontaine is a military fort in Belgium with an irregular rectangular shape surrounded by a continuous ditch. The structure combines elements from the late 19th century with modern concrete components from early fortification techniques.
The fort was built in the early 20th century as part of a defensive line against potential invasions. In August 1914 it was bombarded by German artillery and severely damaged by an explosion, making it uninhabitable.
The fort holds a memorial cemetery for 71 soldiers who died in the 1914 bombardments and found their final resting place there. This site reminds visitors of the human cost of war, reflected in the names and dates on the gravestones.
The fort today functions as an adventure park offering active recreational activities for visitors throughout the year. The site is roughly 7 kilometers southeast of Liège and easily accessible.
The fort visibly shows the effects of war damage, with preserved traces of shell impacts and explosion damage on the walls. These physical marks tell the story of the attack without further words.
