Arboretum Wespelaar, Botanical garden and arboretum in Wespelaar, Belgium
Arboretum Wespelaar is a botanical collection spread across about 20 hectares with over 2000 plant species from around the world. Beyond maples, magnolias and rhododendrons, you find themed gardens and areas representing different climates and growing conditions.
The garden was founded in 1984 by Philippe de Spoelberch and later converted in 2007 into a public foundation. This change made it accessible to visitors and placed it under professional management.
The place shelters rare and threatened plant species, showing visitors which plants face pressure around the world. You can observe how botanicians work here to protect and propagate such species.
Access is only available on certain weekdays during the warmer months, so check opening times before your visit. Wear comfortable shoes since the paths wind through large garden landscapes.
Staff members undertake expeditions to different countries to collect plants and document their wild origins. This fieldwork helps preserve knowledge about natural plant populations that might otherwise be lost.
