Fort 5

Fort 5 is a brick and sandstone fortification located in Edegem with extensive grounds that form part of a larger defensive complex. The structure displays typical 19th-century military design with ramparts, casemates, and various functional spaces arranged across the site.

The fort was built between 1860 and 1864 as part of Belgium's strategy to strengthen defensive lines around Antwerp and protect against potential invasion. It was one of several fortifications constructed during this period to secure the nation's borders and maintain regional security.

The site is open daily and offers parking facilities with accessible pathways throughout the grounds. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the area is expansive and some sections feature uneven ground.

The fort functions as a winter refuge for bats from several species that hibernate in the underground casemates and tunnels beneath the fortification. The dark damp chambers provide perfect conditions for these animals, making the site an unexpected wildlife sanctuary.
