The cemetery opened in July 1917 during the preparations for the Battle of Passchendaele, replacing the original Brandhoek Military Cemetery near Ypres.
King Albert I of Belgium granted this land to the United Kingdom permanently to recognize the British Empire's contributions during World War I.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintains the cemetery grounds, which include individual headstones and landscaped gardens for visitors to explore.
Captain Dr. Noel Godfrey Chavasse, buried in this cemetery, received the Victoria Cross twice for his extraordinary acts of military service.
