Brussels and the European Union refers to the administrative district in Brussels where the main institutions of the European Union are located. The buildings form a compact cluster of concrete, glass and steel structures spread across several city blocks.
The district became a hub for European institutions following the Treaty of Rome in 1957. What was once a residential neighborhood transformed into an administrative center over the following decades.
Place du Luxembourg attracts international civil servants, diplomats, and local residents who gather for social activities, especially during Thursday evening sessions.
Maelbeek and Schuman metro stations on lines 1 and 5 provide direct access to the district. Several bus routes also serve the area and connect it to other parts of the city.
The Berlaymont building takes the form of an X and rises fourteen stories. It has served as headquarters of the European Commission since 1967.
