Falaën Castle, Fortified castle in Onhaye, Belgium
Falaën Castle is a fortified stronghold in Onhaye featuring a quadrilateral layout with three corner towers and a porch tower characteristic of 17th century military design. The estate sprawls across more than two hectares with connected building wings arranged around a central inner courtyard.
The castle was built between 1670 and 1673 by the Polchet family, reflecting 17th century fortified design. It then passed to the Coppin family, who held it for roughly two centuries and shaped its development during that period.
The castle has served as a gathering place for community events, including wine fairs and local exhibitions that shaped the region's cultural life.
The site is located near Onhaye, a small town in Belgium, and is visible from outside though interior access is limited. Visitors should note that the estate is privately held and advance inquiries are recommended.
Standing in the castle's inner courtyard is an old pillory column, a rare feature for this type of structure that signals the owner's historical authority. This column dates to when the estate functioned as a seat of local power and enforcement.
