Château de Colmont

Château de Colmont is a 19th-century castle in Tongeren with a central section of five bays across two stories topped by a slate mansard roof. Symmetrical brick wings extend on each side, and the main part features a distinctive domed structure above ground-level colonnades.

The Bellefroid-Van der Meer family built the castle between 1840 and 1850 on land granted by a prince-bishop. The structure replaced an older fortress on the site and marked a shift from military function to private residential use.

The castle shows how wealthy Belgian families of the 1800s combined comfortable living with elaborate design. You can see in its architecture how they used their homes to display their status and refined taste.

The castle sits along Burchtstraat near the remains of the older Kolmont fortress and is simple to locate. A visit allows you to explore the landscaped grounds that include a pond and decorative fountain.

The central section is topped by a domed structure that stands out distinctly and gives the building special prominence. This architectural choice was used to emphasize the family's importance and status.
