Enclosure of the Executed, War cemetery and protected heritage site in Schaerbeek, Belgium.

The Enclosure of the Executed is a small walled cemetery at 102 rue Colonel Bourg in Schaerbeek, on the site of the former National Shooting Range. A grass-covered embankment rises beside an asphalt path, its sloping face cut with rows of small pale grey stone plaques and niches; two tall metal poles stand on the mound. It holds 365 graves of resistance fighters of both world wars.

The site was the National Shooting Range (Tir national) when German forces seized it in World War I and executed 35 people there, among them Edith Cavell, Philippe Baucq and Gabrielle Petit. In World War II another 261 people were shot, including Youra Livchitz, who had stopped a Holocaust train. After the war the turf where they were buried became a memorial ground, and it was listed as protected heritage on 12 January 1983.

The crosses of Jewish resistance members were replaced by Stars of David, such as that of Sara Kajehmann, the only woman buried here from the Second World War. Some names on the markers were mis-transcribed: Julien Linge is in fact Julien Lincé, and Léon Baudouin appears as Léon Bar. Every last Sunday of April an official ceremony honours the prisoners of the Nazi camps.

The cemetery lies at 102 rue Colonel Bourg/Kolonel Bourgstraat in Schaerbeek, on the plot now shared with the VRT and RTBF media buildings. The grass embankment with its stepped rows of stone plaques rises beside an asphalt path, so the graves are viewed from the path rather than walked among. The site is a protected monument, classified on 12 January 1983.

The 1970 monument honours unknown Belgian political prisoners of the Second World War: a tall burial column with an urn holding relics from concentration camps. It stands beside the memorial to the 35 people executed here in the First World War, whose graves are no longer on the site.
