Fort de Suarlée

Fort de Suarlée is a military fortification in Namur with a triangular design and sloped defensive works. A ditch system surrounds the structure, creating an integrated defense layout built in the late 1800s.

The fort was built in the mid-1800s to secure the border region. It suffered heavy bombardment from German forces in 1914, which damaged its concrete construction.

The fort demonstrates Belgian military engineering from the late 1800s, built to protect the region from potential invaders. Visitors can observe the construction techniques that went into creating these defenses.

This fort can only be visited with special permission since it sits on private land. Be aware that structural issues may limit access on certain days.

Beneath the fort runs a tunnel system that once connected to ventilation towers. These underground passages are now partially flooded by groundwater.
