Queen Astrid Park

Queen Astrid Park, Public park in central Charleroi, Belgium

Queen Astrid Park is a public green space in central Charleroi featuring winding paths and various tree species including Ginkgo and purple beech. The grounds extend across several hectares and offer different areas to explore.

The park was founded in 1882 on the grounds of former fortifications and received its current name in 1935 to honor Queen Astrid of Belgium. This change marked an important moment in the park's identity.

The park holds several monuments scattered across its grounds that visitors encounter while walking, including a music kiosk and memorial sites. These places tell stories of different moments in the city and its people.

The park connects the northern and southern parts of Charleroi with multiple entrances along Boulevard Audent and direct access from Parc metro station. Visitors can easily walk through the different areas and explore the grounds on various routes.

During its inauguration ceremony in 1882, the park demonstrated the use of electric street lighting for the first time in Charleroi. This was a remarkable technological innovation for the city.
