Art Museum Z33, Contemporary art museum in Hasselt, Belgium
Z33 occupies a historic building complex with a new extension that features a handcrafted brick facade creating a distinctive appearance. The exhibition space spans two floors with views overlooking the surrounding gardens and courtyard areas.
The museum grew out of a predecessor institution in 2002 and continued developing its role over time. A new wing called Vleugel 19 was added in 2020, designed by an Italian architect.
The museum presents exhibitions that connect art, design, and architecture while exploring current social issues. These projects often develop through partnerships with scientists and other specialists.
The exhibition area is reached by stairs as the ground floor sits slightly elevated, offering good views of the surroundings. Visitors should allow time to explore both the historic and newer sections of the complex.
The brick wall of the new facade is deliberately sparse in openings, acting as a protective barrier toward the street. This design choice creates interesting plays of light and shadow throughout the day that constantly transform the building's appearance.
