Pullebrug, Double arch bridge in Zandhoven, Belgium
The Pullebrug is a steel bridge crossing the Netekanaal in Zandhoven with three main spans, where the central opening measures around 90 meters. The structure carries expressway traffic across the waterway while also serving pedestrian and local transportation needs.
The original concrete bridge collapsed in November 1966 during heavy fog, resulting in casualties. This disaster led to construction of a new steel structure that was completed in 1968.
The bridge name combines the Dutch word 'brug' meaning bridge with the location name, reflecting the local linguistic heritage of Zandhoven.
The bridge carries vehicle traffic smoothly across the Netekanaal and is best viewed from nearby towpaths and riverbank areas. Visitors can walk along the canal sides to see the structure from different angles.
The bridge employs a bowstring arch design with iron tied arches, measuring approximately 108 meters in total length across the canal. This engineering approach represents a notable solution from the post-war reconstruction era.
