Egmontkasteel

Egmont Castle is a protected medieval fortress in Zottegem situated within a park setting, featuring restored medieval spaces including a knight's hall and a rococo staircase. The structure displays rooms from different periods that were carefully preserved during recent renovation work.

The castle was built in the 11th century and later came under the ownership of Lamoraal van Egmont, whose execution by Spanish forces in 1568 deeply affected the region. These historical events shaped the place's significance for centuries.

The castle now serves as the town library and hosts civil ceremonies in its medieval rooms, playing an active role in the community's daily life. Residents and visitors gather here for official events and cultural activities.

Archaeological excavations in 2001 uncovered three ancient structures beneath the current building, including a stone keep and a 12th-century chapel. These discoveries reveal how the site evolved over many centuries.
