Grand Theatre of Verviers, Opera house in Verviers, Belgium
The Grand Theatre of Verviers is a theatre building with neoclassical stone facade featuring a monumental row of columns at the entrance. Inside, the space displays white and gold fabrics, marble staircases with ornate columns, and an auditorium with seating for about 1300 people.
The building opened in 1892 as one of the earliest theatres to have complete electrical lighting throughout. Architect Charles Thirion designed it using neoclassical principles to serve the city's cultural life.
The theatre served as a gathering place where residents of Verviers experienced the latest artistic trends and cultural developments. Today the interior spaces still reflect this role in the city's social and artistic life.
The building is currently closed for extensive renovation work. Visitors should check in advance when it is expected to reopen and whether special guided tours will be available.
After renovation, the theatre will gain an additional stage building in Elizabethan style at the rear of the main hall. This unusual feature allows different configurations to be set up for various performances and stage designs.
