Fort van Duffel, Military fort in Duffel, Belgium
Fort van Duffel is a military defensive structure with brick walls and concrete vaults built in Duffel, Belgium. The fort sits next to the railway line connecting Brussels and Antwerp, with its layout designed to control the approach routes to the region.
Construction began in 1886 and was completed by 1888 as part of a defensive ring protecting Antwerp. This period saw Belgium strengthening its borders against potential European threats.
The brasserie inside uses the old dormitory spaces and offers work to young people with autism through a local program that keeps the place active and welcoming.
A path of about 1.2 kilometers circles the fort, giving visitors a complete view of its structure. Guided tours through the interior corridors help you understand how the building was designed for defense.
The fort becomes a winter shelter for several bat species, including Geoffroy's bat. Special lighting was installed inside to avoid disturbing the animals while they rest.
