The square emerged around 1300 as Op den marct and developed at the intersection of four main roads leading to Hasselt's city gates. This central position made it the natural meeting point and commercial heart of the city through the centuries.

The square hosts the Meiavondviering celebration each May 1st, marking spring arrival with traditional ceremonies and community gatherings.
