Museum Brouwershuis, Historical water distribution building in Antwerp, Belgium

Museum Brouwershuis is a historical building in Antwerp designed for water distribution, containing a complex pumping system with underground tanks and storage reservoirs. It relied on a mechanical horse mill to move water through pipes to various parts of the city.

Built in 1554 by architect Gilbert van Schoonbeke, the building was Antwerp's first water distribution center during a period of commercial growth. Its construction represented a turning point for the city's infrastructure and water supply systems.

The building served as the meeting place for the Brauers guild starting in 1581, becoming a center for the brewing community to gather and conduct business. It reflected the importance of brewers in Antwerp's merchant class during this period.

The building is currently closed for extensive restoration work and is being transformed into an educational center with funding from the Flemish Government. Check ahead for updated information on reopening dates and access before planning a visit.

The water distribution system remained operational from 1554 until 1930 using wooden tanks and underground pipes without major changes. This remarkable longevity demonstrates the durability of the original engineering design.
