Abbey of Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Nieuwe Plant, Medieval monastery in Roesbrugge and Ypres, Belgium.
The Abbey of Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Nieuwe Plant is a monastery complex in Ypres built with red brick, mansard roofs, and a central tower. The site comprises several connected buildings arranged to form an enclosed monastic compound.
The monastery was founded in 1236 and relocated from Roesbrugge to Ypres in 1588 to escape religious conflicts. It was completely destroyed during World War I and rebuilt in 1920.
The name refers to devotion to the Virgin Mary, which shaped the spiritual life of the monastery. Visitors can still see this religious focus reflected in the architecture and layout of the buildings today.
The complex is located in central Ypres and is easily reachable on foot. The historical buildings are open to the public and now serve as an educational center.
The monastery was part of the Windesheim Congregation, a network of reformed communities across Northern Europe. This connection also shaped the educational approach in the school that was established here.
