Kasteel van Schoonhoven

The Kasteel van Schoonhoven consists of a U-shaped building constructed with iron sandstone, featuring a triangular pediment on the main section and curved frontons on side wings.

The castle grounds trace back to the 13th century, with the current structure built around 1770 under the direction of Jean-Antoine van der Noot replacing an earlier fortification.

The castle complex received formal recognition as architectural heritage in 2021, representing a significant example of Belgian neoclassical architectural design from the 18th century.

The castle maintains private ownership status and restricts public access to specific events, with parking available at the Recreatieoord Schoonhoven on Diestsesteenweg.

Between 1903 and 1908, the castle provided temporary shelter to the French religious order Les Clercs de Saint-Viateur during their exile from France.
