Mergelgroeve van Kanne

The Mergelgroeve van Kanne is a limestone quarry in Belgium featuring an extensive underground tunnel network spanning over 16 kilometers. The chambers within reach heights exceeding 8 meters, creating a vast system of caverns beneath the surface.

Limestone extraction at this site dates back before the 15th century, with the oldest inscriptions found within the tunnels dating to the 17th century. Centuries of mining activity have left their mark on the space, creating a record visible to visitors today.

The quarry has served as a wedding venue since 2012, offering couples a distinctive underground setting for their ceremonies. This use has transformed the space into a memorable location where people gather to mark important life moments below the surface.

The site is located about 42 meters below ground level and is accessed via stairs, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Visitors should expect cool conditions year-round, making a light jacket a practical choice for any visit.

The network maintains a constant temperature of 11 degrees Celsius year-round, making it a natural refuge for bats seeking shelter. This stable cool environment is also used to cultivate mushrooms, taking advantage of the underground setting's natural conditions.
