Mergelgroeve van Kanne, Limestone quarry in Kanne, Belgium.
The underground network of Mergelgroeve van Kanne extends over 16 kilometers of tunnels, with chambers reaching heights of more than eight meters.
Limestone block extraction in this quarry dates back to before the 15th century, with the oldest inscriptions found in the tunnels from the 17th century.
The quarry serves as a wedding venue since 2012, allowing couples to celebrate their ceremonies in this underground location at 42 meters below ground level.
Electronic extensometers installed in 2010 continuously monitor the stability of the cave system by measuring pressure on ceilings and pillars throughout the network.
The quarry maintains a constant temperature of 11 degrees Celsius year-round and functions as a winter shelter for bats and a cultivation site for mushrooms.
