Tondo, Circular footbridge in Freedom Quarter, Brussels, Belgium.
The Tondo is a circular footbridge in the Freedom Quarter that connects two parliamentary buildings with a ring-shaped design covered in reflective panels. The structure creates a visual connection between the two sides through its mirrored surface that bounces light and architecture around it.
The footbridge was designed by the architecture firm OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen and completed in 2020. Its official opening took place in January 2021, marking the completion of a modern connection between two key governmental buildings.
The bridge takes its name from Renaissance circular paintings and incorporates this artistic concept into its circular shape and winding path. Visitors experience this artistic reference directly as they walk across the structure.
The bridge is easy to cross, with a gentle slope of 4% handling the height difference and ensuring accessibility for everyone. This minimal incline makes the crossing comfortable for visitors of all ages and mobility levels.
The floor hangs from the roof structure, creating a weightless appearance while minimizing visual bulk. This suspension system also provides shelter from the elements while maintaining open sightlines in every direction.
