Munitiedepot Arendonk, Military ammunition depot in Voorheide, Arendonk, Belgium.
Munitiedepot Arendonk is a former ammunition storage facility in the Voorheide area near the Dutch border. The site contains approximately 83 underground bunkers spread across a large area, each constructed with thick walls to safely hold explosives and military supplies.
This storage facility became operational in the 1960s as a military ammunition depot and served its purpose for several decades. Following the Cold War's end, it was transferred to Belgian defense authorities and later repurposed for different uses.
The depot represents a significant period of post-war military cooperation between Belgium and West Germany during the Cold War period.
Access to the site is restricted and monitored by Belgian military forces, as the location remains in active use. Visitors should inquire in advance about accessibility, as only certain areas may be open or special permissions might be required.
Part of the grounds was converted into an asylum seeker reception center, giving this former military site a completely different social purpose. This repurposing shows how abandoned military locations across Europe are being adapted for new community needs.
