Srebarna Nature Reserve

Srebarna Nature Reserve is a wetland covering around 900 hectares along the Danube and provides habitat for hundreds of plant and bird species. The protected area features shallow water, reed beds, and shoreline zones that together form a dense network of ecosystems.

The area gained protection status in 1948 and received UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 1983 for its ecological importance. This recognition highlighted its role as one of southeastern Europe's most significant wetlands.

The site holds special significance for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, attracting thousands of migratory birds annually as they travel between Africa and Europe. People visit to witness this natural passage and experience the diversity of wildlife supported by the wetland.

Access is best along marked trails and observation points around the reserve, offering clear views of waterfowl and other species. Visiting early in the morning or late afternoon provides the most rewarding wildlife viewing opportunities.

The site is home to more than 200 bird species, including the Dalmatian Pelican, which maintains its only breeding colony in Bulgaria here. This pelican population is a sight found nowhere else in the country.
