Episcopal Basilica, Sandanski

The Episcopal Basilica is an early Christian church building in Sandanski with three naves, floor mosaics, and colored plaster walls. The structure spans two distinct floor levels with multiple chambers that show the complex organization of this religious complex.

The basilica was built in the fourth century during Christianity's global expansion and combines late Roman architectural elements with boulder foundations and brick banding. The construction method with alternating materials shows the regional building style of early Byzantine times.

The basilica had separate areas for different religious practices, including a baptism chamber and different levels for male and female worshippers. This layout shows how early communities organized their worship spaces.

The site is located about one kilometer from central Sandanski and is easily accessible with parking nearby. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the ancient floor surfaces are uneven, and it is wise to allow time to explore the different levels and chambers.

The site features a natural spring with water that the early community considered sacred. The original fountain system still functions today through the principle of communicating vessels, an engineering feat integrated into the basilica's architecture.
