Red Ruthenia, Historical region between southeastern Poland and western Ukraine.
Red Ruthenia is a historical region spanning both sides of the Polish-Ukrainian border. It includes cities like Lviv, Ternopil, Chełm, Zamość, and Przemyśl, which developed over centuries with layered cultural identities.
The region came under Polish control in 1340 when King Casimir the Great initiated a conquest that led to the founding of many cities. Between the 14th and 17th centuries, around 325 settlements were established that shaped the territory permanently.
The name comes from Ruthenian peoples who lived here for centuries. The architecture in cities like Lviv still shows traces of the different communities that coexisted in the region.
The region is best explored by visiting individual cities, as they are spread across the Polish-Ukrainian border. Lviv is the largest center and offers a good base for exploring surrounding settlements.
The northern part was originally inhabited by Lendians and White Croats, while Boykos and Lemkos settled in southern areas over time. These distinct populations developed their own traditions and shaped the regional identity in different ways.
