Lida Castle

Lida Castle is a rectangular fortress featuring two corner towers with thick walls constructed from large boulders faced with red brick, located along the Kamenka River. The structure maintains its original defensive design despite over seven centuries of occupation and changes.

Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania ordered construction of this defensive fortress between 1323 and 1325 as protection against Teutonic raids on the region. The castle underwent multiple reconstructions following damage sustained during various conflicts over the centuries.

The castle attracts visitors interested in medieval architecture and the demonstrations of traditional combat and crafts held on its grounds. These events offer a glimpse into how people lived and worked during that period.

The castle is located in the town of Lida and can be reached by train or bus from Minsk or Grodno, with the journey taking about two hours from either city. Daytime visits are best for exploring the fortification and grounds on foot.

The fortress rests on sand foundations, which surprises many visitors who expect a stone base beneath such a solid structure. Despite this unconventional foundation, the castle has remained standing and maintained its strength through centuries.
