Hlybokaje

Hlybokaje is a town in Vitebsk Region in northeastern Belarus and serves as the administrative center for the surrounding district. It sits along an international road connection and is surrounded by farmland and smaller settlements.

The town first appears in written records in 1514, marking its long presence in the region. During the Second World War, it experienced severe losses and tragic events.

The town served as an important center for the region's Jewish community, who built synagogues and shaped a vibrant cultural life here over centuries. This heritage still marks the appearance of certain streets and buildings today.

Jews began settling in the town from the 17th century onward, and their population grew steadily over time. By the late 19th century, they made up nearly three-quarters of the town's population.
